The Sasquatch, Saskatchewan’s newest and most biting independent newspaper, is seeking submissions for its February 2010 issue!
Published both online and in print, our stories are picked up by decision-makers, rural prairie folks, labour activists, the environmental movement and newsmakers across the country. Recent stories in The Sasquatch have exposed underreported and important issues like the youth suicide epidemic in northern Saskatchewan, the sale of native grasslands, the politics behind the nuclear debate, the privatization of public utilities, and the state of journalism in the province, to name a few.
The Sasquatch is always on the lookout for compelling content that is relevant to the people of Saskatchewan. We want new and experienced reporters who feel strongly enough about issues to go out and get the story. We’re looking for thoughtful, provocative stories that haven’t been told elsewhere or that offer a new perspective to stories found in the corporate media.
We welcome hard-hitting investigative reporting, proactive op-eds, incisive political analysis, news briefs, feature articles, profiles, creative non-fiction, daily humour, cartoons, photography and artwork that explore issues and reveal Saskatchewan’s political, economic, social, cultural and environmental climate.
Got a story idea? Pitch it to us.
Possible topics include (but are by no means limited to):
Provincial and municipal politics
Social policy (including housing, education and health)
Labour relations, strategies and disputes
Aboriginal issues
Energy & Resource policy
Agriculture & Food
Immigration
Anti-poverty initiatives
Party politics
Gender & sexuality issues
Climate change policy
Grassroots innovations
Arts & Culture
Crime & Justice
Queries are how it all begins so send us an outline of your story idea, estimated length and how or why you are involved in the topic, along with a writing sample. Queries for the February issue are being accepted until Nov. 15, with a first draft deadline of Nov. 25. We reserve the right to edit your work (with your active involvement) and cannot guarantee publication.
Please send your queries and submissions to: sasquatchATbriarpatchmagazineDOTcom.
The Sasquatch is published 8 times a year alongside a regularly updated website with online-only content. Writers whose original work is published in the print edition will be paid $0.10 per word. The Sasquatch will also pay for photography and artwork appearing in the print publication.
We look forward to hearing from you.
